Bowtie Diary beauty product of the month: DIY lip cream

August 30, 2013

This month's beauty product is a fabulously simple lip cream, that you can easily make yourself. I've had this little trick up my sleeve for years and it never ceases to amaze people. Thank you to whoever introduced it to me.
The "recipe" is as follows:

Retsept on järgnev:
You need/Vaja läheb:
a tube of vaseline/ üks tuup vaseliini
some kind of essence (I used bitter almond, but vanilla or coffee also work well) /
an empty and clean powder/eyeshadow/etc case / tühi ja puhas puudri/lauvärvi või muu väike topsike
a pot with hot water/ pott kuuma veega
a heatproof bowl/ kuumakindel kauss

1. Squeeze the amount of vaseline you need into the heatproof bowl. / Pigista vajaminev kogus vaseliini kuumakindlasse kaussi.
2. Place the bowl over a pot with boiling water and mix it until the vaseline is liquid. / Aseta kauss kuuma veega täidetud poti kohale ja sega, kuni see on vedelaks muutunud.
3. Add a few drops of the essence, depending on how fragrant you want your lip cream to be. Mix a bit. / Lisa segule mõni tilk essentsi, olenevalt sellest, kui tugevalõhnalist kreemi tahad. Sega veidi.
4. Pour the vaseline into your container. / Kalla vaseliinisegu oma topsikesse.
5. Place it in the fridge for a few hours, so the vaseline sets again. / Aseta see mõneks tunniks külmkappi, et segu jälle tahkuks.
6. Enjoy! / Naudi!

Instaoutfits

August 25, 2013

You know, sometimes I take pictures of my oufit and they don't come out as good as I'd imagined and I'm not loving the quality and the overall feel and decide not to post them on the blog. Shocking, I know. Because it's quality over quantity for me any day. But I thought that it wouldn't be very nice to let all the outfits go to waste, so I decided to start doing little Facebook and Twitter exclusives of my outfits. I've already put a few sets up there and I'm going to continue with that, so if you want to see more of what I'm wearing daily, follow my on Facebook or Twitter!
Have fun, guys!

Baltika F/W collections

August 21, 2013

As I mentioned a few posts back, I was invited to view Baltika Group's fall/winter collections and what a marvellous night it was! It was also their jubilee celebration, so everything was double the beauty, glamour and luxury. Of course the venue itself was amazing- a usual parking house by day, a fabulous runway by night.
I was staring at the runway in absolute awe all evening. My big favourite was Baltman, the brand that never ceases to amaze me with spectacular styling and limitless sartorial style. If I could, I'd dress every man in Baltman, honestly. As for womenswear, I would like everything from Monton to hang in my closet, please!
Enjoy the beautiful pictures that my friend Grete gladly took and be inspired by the best of Estonian fashion! And if you like what you're seeing, check out the video on Baltika's Facebook page here!

Nagu mõni postitus tagasi sai mainitud, olin kutsutud Baltika sügistalviste kollektsioonide esitlustele ja veetsin ühe maagilise õhtu Eesti juhtivate moebrändide juublit tähistades. Üritus toimus Lutheri kvartali parkimismajas, mis üheks õhtuks muutus võluvalt valgusküllaseks moelavaks.
Istusin terve õhtupooliku peaaegu suu lahti, totra naeratusega, vaadates hämmastunult minu ette ilmuvaid imeilusaid riideid.

Monton
Fun prints, pretty colours and cool details all made the perfect fall wardrobe. And I think that I saw my new winter coat on the runway...

 Mosaic
Classic beauty with Slavic roots for women, all very modern-day Anna Karenina. As for men, there's the fail safe classics that always work!

Baltman
Men, it's ALL in the details. And all about having fun. If you have a cottage in Scotland and a penthouse in London, you'll definitely love the whole collection. If you are not a character from MIC, the clothes are still for you.

 Bastion
Simply timeless elegance, but every single thing comes with a twist. Or a ruffle or a pretty print. Either way, if you go shopping with mom, you'll both find something to love.

Defined by mystery, luxury and power, Ivo Nikkolo empowers women in its own special way.

Naughty Nineties

It was Halloween in 1988, I decided to dress up as a Hippie. A woman said something I have never forgotten... "You know you're getting old when kids start dressing up like you did as a teenager." Well, this is the year it's really happening to me. As someone who loved alternative chic in the 90's (a little grunge, a little goth, a little punk, a little ska) it's nice to see some of those styles "coming back" for nostalgia if not for anything else. While, I personally will take a seat back, having already lived it before, this week's links have all kinds of 90's themes to them. From Michelle Williams (hey Dawson's Creek hit in '99) to St. Laurent's grunge inspired collection, to the 10 Alternative Fashion blogs to watch, it's there, so just click!

Mind still in summer, body already in autumn

August 18, 2013

I really don't like the last weeks of Autumn. It's a constant whirlwind between summer and autumn. My mind keeps telling me to enjoy the last bits of summer left, but the weather outside keeps reminding me of the dreadful darker season quickly approaching. Even more, I was lucky enough to be invited to Baltika's fall/winter fashion show (recap coming soon!) and with clothes so gorgeous being presented on the runway, who doesn't want to wear them and forget about bare feet and sandals as soon as possible? It so often happens that the anticipation for the next season slightly ruins the beauty of the current one.
The same thing is with my outfit. I tried to keep it summery with feminine florals and lace, à la Dolce and Gabbana in Sicily, but in order to actually exist in Estonia, I had to throw on my parka, because it was slightly raining and the temperature was way below my comfort zone. See my dilemma? Although maybe that's what they like to call transitioning from summer to autumn...

August 15, 2013

Guys! It's been ages since I've done something in return for your endless love and kind words, but now here it is! I've teamed up with Kin Leaves, a super fun online store dealing with skins for all the necessities in life aka your phone, laptop and every other gadget imaginable.
I have three 15$ gift vouchers to give away to you and all you have to do to be one of the lucky ones, is like Bowtie Diary and Kin Leaves on Facebook (here and here) and then leave a comment on this post with your name, e-mail address and phone model (because I have a few sneaky special prizes too!). Just for the fun of it, I'd love to know, which skin would you choose from their store. To spice up my ancient phone, I picked out this pretty floral pattern and now I'm constantly looking for an excuse to take my phone out of my purse!
The giveaway is worldwide (beause they have free international shipping!) and will run for a week, so I'll pick the winner on the 23rd of August. Ready, set, go!

Bowtie Diary interview: Bug wooden accessories

August 13, 2013

While I was at Positivus festival, I spotted a cute little stall at the market, among other equally fun ones, which offered an array of beautiful wooden bowties. Of course, when I got home, I just had to check them out online and following a few good hours lusting after their pretty wooden bows and exchanging some friendly emails, I made a little interview with the Latvian creators behind Bug wooden accessories. Enjoy this little feature and don't forget to check out their shop and Facebook page

Piia: Firstly, how old is Bug and how did you decide to launch it?
Bug team: The idea of wooden bowties came about after a long period of thinking and brainstorming. It all began with the right creative setting (our then-new workshop), where we could experiment freely with an array of materials, coming up with the strangest of ideas, all thanks to our comprehensive skill set and experience.
The first Bug wooden bowties went up for sale just before Christmas 2012. We're a new company – just over half a year has passed since our launch.

P: What's the story behind the name Bug?
B: Our name and logo were inspired by interpreting the shape of a bowtie as a bug - a butterfly. The creature has spread its wings and is looking to explore the world in the hunt for its right place and master.

P: Describe the process of making a Bug bow.
B: Bugs are handmade using oak, maple, wenge, mahogany and amaranto woods. The unique, natural textures of these are emphasised with either linseed oil, wax or shellac polish. Only the best wood is chosen since it needs to be flexible enough for forming the special shape of the bowtie. Each bow consists of three layers. The fastening is concealed under the top layer, making Bugs stronger and quite simply prettier. We source our materials worldwide.

P: Do you have any cool new designs planned?
B: This month we're releasing something truly special for classic fashion lovers- wooden cuff links. Different wood veneers form a pattern along the sides of the cuff link and the top is beautiful Satin Walnut. Thanks to the wood's unique texture, no pair will be the same as another.
We're really exited about our bowtie and cuff link gift sets which will shortly be available.

P: Have you considered using other interesting materials?
B: Our ideas are always grounded in wood. This is intrinsic to our brand. However, we are considering pairing wood veneers with other materials like leather and precious metals in the future.

P: Why should people wear wooden bowties instead of usual ones?
B: A fabric bowtie is a classic but we offer a more interesting accessory made out of a way more exciting material. Each Bug is a piece of art with the added value of great design. You can wear them both day to day and on special occasions – the opera, weddings, dates, proms and more.

P: The important question for my readers is that where can Bugs be bought outside of Latvia?
B: Estonian buyers can currently buy our bow ties at our Etsy store but we'd love for them to be able to see and feel our bow ties and barrettes before buying. So, drop us a line if you happen to be a design store manager in Estonia and would like to broaden your collection with some handmade wooden accessories.

P: If you could choose one ideal celebrity to wear a Bug, who would it be?
B: Choosing just one proved quite the challenge! Since there are three of us in the Bug team, we chose four:
  1. Toomas Hendrik Ilves- His wardrobe would be nicely complemented by a wooden bow tie.
  2. Devendra Banhart- He is a person who's look and personality embodies the naturalness of our bowties.
  3. Bjork- Original hair barrettes for her expressive look.
  4. Ed Westwick- Gentleman look on screen which oozes elegance.

P: What are Bugs plans for the future?
B: We want to become a well-known, trustworthy brand not only in Latvia but also further afield. To help us achieve this, we'll be working on various other wooden accessories for ladies and gentlemen.

(Since I'm starting journalism studies in autumn, I'm thinking of making this into a slightly regular feature to improve my interview skills and introduce new talent to you. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!)

She thinks she's made of candy

August 09, 2013

Robbie Williams- Candy

Yesterday I attended a lovely little event at a cute shop called Ateljee no. 13 to see the launch of a new Estonian-Italian clothing brand called Lowi Vi. The evening was filled with clothes so pretty and ethereal, that they felt like a dream to look at. Add some sparkling wine and girlie chats and you have yourself a pretty perfect summer night in my books!
Of course, knowing me, I'll take any chance I get to dress up and this was no exception. Despite not being a self-confessed mascot of a candy store or one of Jamie Laing's candy kittens, I picked out the most marshmallowy and bubblegum-like shades in my closet, threw on my favourite shoes and tied a ribbon in my hair, because that's what summer dressing is all about for me.

Summer in the city

August 03, 2013

I love those summer days in the city, when after a supernlazy morning I try to do as much as humanly possible. On this particular day, after sleeping like a fairytale character and enjoying one of my famous breakfasts, Getter an I went to town to browse aimlessly in bookstores and then went for lunch at a super cute cafe at the Old Town to meet Kaisa and fill her in on the latest events. (Did I hear someone say Positivus?) After that, hit the cinema with my little sis and then a cycling workout with dad. If that isn't productive, I don't know what is.
For the outfit, I chose all of my favourite new buys for a very summer-appropriate all white outfit and mixed them with old favourites. I picked up that lace skirt at Seppälä, after not having visited the store for years and then setting my eyes on this skirt, it was a match made in heaven. I deliberated buying it for a few hours and then decided that a lace pencil skirt is "such a staple and I will wear it for years to come". The same was with the shirt and the beautiful, slightly reminiscent of the Marant Caroll sandals, which actually are the perfect summer heels by Vagabond.
