London Travel Tips

June 26, 2015

We spent only three days in London, when in reality it would need thirty to actually live and breathe the city and get to know its many magical corners. I also have this really strong touristy urge, so before I can actually fully enjoy myself, I have to see all the "important places" and tick all the boxes. Nevertheless, I'll try to give you a small (and quite personal, not at all universal-to-everyone) selection of things to do and places to go in London. Do feel free to share your own tips in the comments, because I'm sure that this won't be my last time in London and the next time, I've already seen all the Big Bens and Westminster Abbeys, so I can really do some exploring!

1. Walk around as much as possible. It's tiring, but you know, #touristlife. We actually used the underground a lot too, because that's the easiest and fastest way of travelling long distances in London, but when you're exploring a neighbourhood, then take the time and bother to walk. Although taking the bus is also a nice experience and being on the second floor of a double decker is such a cool feeling.
2. Go to the free museums! I spent three hours at the National Gallery oohing and aahing over the paintings that I've only seen in textbooks, so if you're even slightly into art (history), then you have to go! Another stunning free museum is the Victoria and Albert, which I just popped into really quickly and decided to leave it for the next time. It's just as huge and has a great historic collection of practical art.
3. Visit Camden. This hipster hub has a whole other breathing and you won't regret visiting it. There's a huge market, where you can find independent designers, vintage or Chinese mass produced stuff. And then there's the food market. Oh boy, I could eat there every day for a month and not get tired, it just has so many versatile booths offering cuisine from all around  the world!
4. When you're not lunching in Camden and the weather permits, then have a picnic. Wherever possible, because London has so many amazing parks just begging for you to sit down and have a bite. We popped by a little deli and picnicced at the Green Park just next to Buckingham palace.
5. Go on a boat tour on the Thames. I believe that they might even be used with an Oyster card, so that's cheap if you already have a day transport pass. We didn't go this time, but the last time I was in London way back in 2008, we did, and I remember that it was a genius way of seeing the riverside and not having to walk too much.
6. Find a view! We went all the way to Primrose Hill to see a panorama of the city, but there's also the Emirates Air Line which you can also take with an Oyster card and St. Paul's Cathedral viewing platform. And of course the London Eye, which I've heard is too expensive for such a view.
7. Send postcards! That's actually a universal recommendation for any city in the world, but who wouldn't want to find a greeting from London in their postbox! Remember your grandparents or send a card to your family, when travelling with friends or vice versa!
8. Check out national holidays and maybe try to plan your trip around them. We were right during the Queen's birthday celebrations, so we almost caught the horse guards' parade and the city was gorgeously decorated. The last time we saw St. Patrick's Day celebrations, which had a whole other vibe.

  2. Always funny to see common sights documented through someone else's eyes. I love Camden, I've been frequenting it since I was a teenager and even give unofficial tours to non London friends
